Experiencing the Prankster 4 at The 9:30 Club

Once again, I ventured to D.C. to see my band - skipping Q & Not U and the whole entire pretentious D.C. punk scene at the Black Cat - I was greeted by Mary waving from afar.

That sweet Mary, always hugging and waving, even when the others (ahem, boys) are ignoring me. That's why we love her.

The starters - Fidel - were fresh, young and sexy. Good vocals, excellent bass.
The second course - Live Alien Broadcast - just didn't do it for me. Not that they're a bad band - they just reminded me of a Sprite commercial, or, as one cutie up front put it, "they sung the same song for a whole hour."

Before the main course was served, I caught a glimpse of that cutie Val Yumm. If her guitar playing doesn't make her a local legend, her smile definitely will. What awesome teeth! A real Hottie in the now. You need to check her out. I forgot the Web site or I'd give it to you.

Back to my experience ....

Mary hit the stage like a Dallas Cowboys cheerleader, in a fringe halter and those signature red pants. Boys followed, and the four launched into the usual starters - "Tits and Whisky," "Piss Off," "Student Loan," and "Mata Hari," before reaching for the bottles...

It was another one of those "do I wear the cowboy hat or not?" nights at the 9:30 club but the set was clean. The band looks like they're having more fun (perhaps less pressure) these days, shifting to one-another's side for mocking heavy metal band instrument poses.

Of the new numbers played, I'm most fond (so far) of "Irresponsible Woman." I suppose I like its slow, seductivness and the way it suddenly bites you here and there. I really miss "Brave New Baby" (or was it Brand New Baby?), you know the, "oh my melancholy baby" song.... I don't know why MP stopped playing it.

Dave is now fully integrated with MP - his knowledge of notes amazes me - he even learned how to replace the "Ba Ba Bas" in "The Bottle's Talking Now," with guitar notes.

Maw and Paw Prankster were present. If you are wondering how I know this, take a look for yourself. I'm practically certain they're the cute, cuddly older man and woman who look just like Mary, singing along to each word.

Mary ended the night with "Breakfast," having played every "Blue Skies over Dundalk" song, which pleased the crowd immensely. I knew she'd be barraged at the end so I didn't bother sticking around, but if you did, I hope it was fun.
