Mary Prankster sleeps with the Fishes 04/01/00

I know it’s taken me forever to get this review out, but ever since I broke up with Drew, I’ve been going out until the cows come home (and they did, to Olney, Md.) and I haven’t had time to write a review.
How can you write a review when you’re busy being a rock star on your own?

Not to say that last week’s show at Fletcher’s wasn’t FABULOUS! Did Mary ever sleep with those fishes! The nautical theme went well with my undersea-post breakup mood – and I loved the opening sailor song where Jon sung, too. That Jon has quite a lovely voice, I tell you. Hope to hear more of it…

That might’ve been my best Mary Prankster experience yet. I don’t know if it was the bubbles floating from atop the stage, the gin and tonic in my hand or the loud ass Fletcher’s atmosphere that was most appealing, but dearest Mary played every song – yes, including “Mac and Cheese,” including Breakfast, and including Takes His Place, which I requested in a sob-driven email to Mary…

“Brand New Baby,” “Sun” and “Piss Off” were especially raunchy – and that little pirate girly fishnet number Mary wore definitely added a bit of flair – and I found it quite amusing that, during “Roulette Girl,” the entire audience sung the Daniel sisters’ gospel parts.

Lately, MP has been saving “Tits and Whisky” for the encore, which, being their rock n’ roll anthem, I totally understand. However, I kind of liked it paired with “Piss Off” and given away right away like sex to a new boyfriend. Here you have it, the sweet center of the fruit, ripe and ready for you … so if you like what you’ve tasted, stick around to enjoy another few morsels…

Ah love… Bethany met this old, tattooed drunken Scotsman who bought her a gin and tonic. I ran into Cory Howell, who used to be my boss, but is now just a drunkard….(just kidding Cory), and then Bethany, Greg T and I went home, with Greg T., who rivals me as Mary’s #1 groupie, telling me to we could listen to anything, “as long as it wasn’t industrial.” Oh really?

There’s a good reason why Bethany is the only one allowed to choose the music in my vehicle.

But I have yet to meet a man who agrees with my musical taste as much as Bethany – Drew loves techno and industrial, but he’d cop a major attitude as soon as I put on PJ Harvey’s “4 Track Demos.” Gregs Aldape and Simmons are way over the edge with the hard core/punk thing, and Jason listens to too much clubby, St. Etienne, British music for my taste….
Yet another reason to become a lesbian…
